The AN320-1 is a plain steel castellated hex nut with 6-40 UNF threads designed for cotter-pinned aircraft bolt joints in shear-only service. The castellated design features notches around the hex head to accommodate a cotter pin, preventing accidental loosening during vibration and flight operations. Used on control-system clevis bolts and drilled-shank bolts where shear loads predominate.
Installation requires tightening to snug condition followed by cotter pin insertion through the bolt shank and nut castellations. Meets AN standard specifications for aerospace fastener applications.
