The TSO-C91 is an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) that broadcasts distress signals on 121.5 MHz following aircraft impact or emergency activation. This analog unit meets the legacy FAA Technical Standard Order C91 and remains certificated for existing installations. The transmitter activates automatically upon crash impact or manually via cockpit controls to alert search and rescue operations.
TSO-C91 units predate modern 406 MHz systems and cannot be newly installed per regulations effective June 21, 1995. Existing aircraft may retain TSO-C91 ELTs in compliance with 14 CFR 91.207 when properly maintained and functional.
